All ceramic / porcelain crown

What is the All ceramic / porcelain crown?

All ceramic / porcelain crown is a type of cosmetic crown which is made purely from ceramic and no other material. These crowns can possess a translucency that makes them the most cosmetically pleasing of all of the different types of dental crowns.

Porcelain is a particular type of ceramic that is built by stacking and firing.

Another types of ceramic crown are:
-  zirconia,
-  E-Max.

Zirconia crown is made from zirconia, a very strong material which is compatible with the human body.

E-Max crown is made from a single block of lithium disilicate ceramic. This is a top grade material which has been harvested for its toughness, durability and opaque qualities.

Advantages and disadvantages of All ceramic / porcelain crown?

All ceramic crowns are ideally suited to people who have minimal space within their mouth for a crown or prefer something which has a natural appearance.

They are made from a thinner material which results in a lighter crown. Plus the material used is ‘bio-compatible’ which is kind to natural gum tissue and enables it to grow back alongside the crown.

There is no risk of an allergic reaction or sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

The main downside of this type of crowns is that it is less durable than other types of crowns which mean it is more prone to cracking or breaking.

Plus the refinement needed to produce these crowns makes them more difficult to fit. They require a high degree of expertise on the part of the dentist which increases their cost.
