What is the Vaginoplasty?

A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the vagina. This is done by removing excess vaginal lining and tightening the surrounding soft tissues and muscles.

Vaginoplasty is also can be considered as a reconstructive plastic surgery procedure for correcting the defects and deformities of the vaginal canal and its mucous membrane.

During delivery of a baby the vagina and surrounding tissues and muscles become stretched. After delivery the vagina may return to a more "normal" size, but it often fails to return to its' pre pregnancy diameter. Generally, the more vaginal deliveries, the worse the condition gets. Many women will complain of decreased sensation and sexual satisfaction during intercourse.

What is the procedure?

The average length of vaginoplasty procedure is between 1 and 2 hours, it is done under either a general or a local anesthetic with additional sedatives. The stretched muscle at the back of the vagina is joined together and shortened with dissolvable stitches. Any unwanted skin is also removed. This will tighten the vaginal muscles and the surrounding soft tissues by reducing the excess vaginal lining. Scarring is inside the vagina.

What kind of result can you expect?

The result is an immediate decrease the diameter of the vagina, and an increase in the tightness of vaginal muscles. This will also restore the vagina and supporting structures to a pre-pregnancy state.

As well as physical pain or discomfort being alleviated, vaginoplasty can also help to restore your self-esteem and sexual confidence, allowing your sex life to return to previous sensation.

Recovery period and recommendations

After the vaginal tightening surgery you are likely to be sore within the vaginal region for a good few days, but you will be given pain killers to help this. It is usually sore to walk for a few days. It is important that you keep the area as clean as possible, especially after visiting the toilet. After about a week most women feel comfortable enough to return to work, and after three weeks or so there should be no discomfort left. Any scarring will be internal, and as a result not visible to the eye, Bruising and swelling caused by the surgery will dissipate about a week after the surgery. You ought not to use tampons, or to have sexual intercourse for six weeks after a vaginoplasty, this is to ensure that the area doesn’t get disturbed while it is healing.

Possible side effects and complications

The most common risks of surgery may include bleeding, infection, and scarring, however these are very unusual. Bleeding is controlled at the time of surgery and antibiotics are given postoperatively to prevent infection.

As incisions are required during vaginal tightening, some scarring may result. However, your surgeon will make every effort to place the incisions in a discreet location, mainly inside the vagina or in a natural crease or fold in the area. With proper care, these scars will eventually fade into a barely noticeable and fine line.
