Dermal fillers

What is the Dermal filler?

Dermal fillers plump up your skin, making it appear fuller and smoother. Dermal fillers are often used to reduce and smooth nose to lip lines, lip to chin lines, lines and wrinkles around your lips, and to enhance your lip shape. There are a range of dermal fillers available. They can be permanent or temporary. Surgeons usually recommend non-permanent dermal fillers made from a tissue-friendly gel that closely resembles a naturally occurring acid in the body.
The most commonly used dermal fillers are Collagen based or Hyaluronic based. The solution is injected into the skin to add volume and create a more youthful appearance.
The effect of treatment with non-permanent dermal fillers can last from four to nine months, depending on the area you have treated. You will need to have repeat treatments if you want the effects to last.

What is the procedure?

The dermal filler procedure can be finished within 30 to 60 minutes. After you and your doctor have selected the dermal filling substance the doctor will place a small amount of topical anesthetic cream to the blemished region. The surgeon will proceed to inject the filler into the skin and will continue to fill the skin with the substance until the desired texture is achieved. The skin will then be massaged and smoothed until it is shaped properly.

What kind of result can you expect?

Results are typically noticed within the first 3 to 5 days following the injection of the dermal filler. Within 1 to 2 weeks the patient will begin to notice the greatest and more lasting effects of the dermal filler. Most patients report having excellent and younger looking features for anywhere from 3 to 9 months following the injection.

Recovery period and recommendations

The process of using dermal filling is almost entirely noninvasive and patients typically feel only mild discomfort. Because the skin is only penetrated with a small needle there is no chance of any scars being left behind.

Possible side effects and complications

Upon completion of the dermal filling procedure the patient will experience few to no side effects. A small amount of redness may arise in the treated region and the skin can possibly swell up, though these effects are generally very minimal. The patient's skin may feel somewhat swollen and tender for a few hours or days following the injection.
