Brow lift / Forehead lift / Endoscopic Forehead lift

What is the Brow lift / Forehead lift / Endoscopic Forehead lift?

One of the most common endoscopic procedures for patients who want their face and skin to look better is a forehead lift. Forehead lifts are much less invasive than most other procedures and only requires a few small incisions to be made. These small incisions are made in order to allow the surgeon to decrease the noticeability of frown lines on the forehead and those that are found in the eyebrow region.

The endoscopic forehead and brow lift is used to elevate the position of the eyebrows and forehead. Indications for this procedure are multiple, and it is performed to correct brow ptosis and to treat the glabellar frown lines created by the corrugator and procerus muscles. Various factors, including natural aging, facial nerve injury, and facial trauma, can cause brow ptosis, although congenital or hereditary factors also may cause the condition.

What is the procedure?

During the procedure the surgeon will either remove or make alterations to the muscles and skin that are causing aging signs such as sagging eyebrows and forehead lines. A brow lift is performed on patients who want to raise the level of their eyebrows. A small amount of anesthesia is generally required and most patients are released either the same day as the surgery or the following morning. Because the anesthesia used is generally applied locally the patient will be awake during the procedure but will not feel much pain. The surgeon may determine that a mild sedative is required in order to reduce stress and anxiety.

Following the operation the excess tissue, muscles, and skin will be removed and the surgeon will close any incisions that were made with either staples or stitches. The patient's face and hair are then washed in order to prevent any aggravation or irritation to the skin around the area operated on. The area will be wrapped with gauze or an elastic bandage in order to prevent excessive bleeding. The patient will continue to feel some numbing sensations and discomfort that can be treated and calmed with painkillers.

What kind of result can you expect?

The surgery allows patients to appear much younger and more rested than they did prior to the lift. You may feel tired and down on yourself immediately following the procedure because of the medication and incisions, but this feeling passes within the first few days as you notice how much younger and better your face looks.

Recovery period and recommendations

Most patients are able to walk within one or two days and it is recommended that they take a week off from work. Physical activity should be limited for the first few weeks following operation. After a few weeks you may experience an itching sensation for some time due to the formation of a small scar. This itchy feeling should disappear within the following two to three weeks.

This procedure can cause some swelling of the eye region and full recovery can last several weeks.

Possible side effects and complications

In a minimal number of cases there is a small amount of hair loss that can take a few weeks to several months to return. For most people the incisions are underneath the hairline and thus there is no risk of scars that can be viewed by the public. If you have a receding hair line then there might be signs of a very light, thin scar following surgery.

A forehead lift should not be performed on those who are at risk of blood clots, smoke, or have uncontrollable high blood pressure without proper permission and a physical from a physician.
