Botulinum toxin / botox injections

What is the Botulinum toxin / botox injections?

Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used in small doses to treat health and/or cosmetic problems, including temporary removal of facial wrinkles, severe underarm sweating, cervical dystonia - a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscle contractions, blepharospasm - uncontrollable blinking, strabismus - misaligned eyes.

Botox injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or by blocking certain nerves.

What is the procedure?

Getting a Botox injection takes just a few minutes. Treatment involves injection of very small amounts of Botulinum toxin into the underlying muscles to immobilize them.

What kind of result can you expect?

It can take 3 to 4 days before you notice an effect from the Botox. The full effect may take up to 1 week.

The results of cosmetic procedures with Botulinum toxin vary but can last up to eight months.

Recovery period and recommendations

For the first 2 to 3 hours after treatment, do not rub the treated area. After that, you can return to your regular activities.

Possible side effects and complications

Side effects can include pain at the injection site, flu-like symptoms, headache and upset stomach. Injections in the face may also cause temporary drooping eyelids.

In extreme cases, this muscle weakness can limit your facial expressions. In rare cases, a sore may develop on the white of the eye (corneal ulceration).
