Self-ligating braces

What is Self-ligating braces?

Self -ligating brackets are technologically advanced brackets that reduce friction and use lighter forces during treatment.

Ordinary braces use ‘elastic bands’ (technical name ‘ligatures’) to secure an archwire into a slot in each bracket. This is called ligation. The bands can become stained or stretched – requiring your orthodontist to change them. They can also retain food particles, making it more difficult for you to keep your braces clean.

Self-ligating braces don’t use ligatures to hold the archwire – they are self-ligating. Instead of elastic bands these braces use small metal clips to hold the archwire into the bracket.

What are the benefits of Self-ligating braces?

The following benefits of self-ligating braces may be outlined:

- increased treatment speed (up to 4 months quicker than tied in braces);
- increased comfort for patients;
- improved oral cleanliness;
- less need for dental extractions.
